Its source lies in the higher
reaches of the Nuweveld Mountains, which fall within the Karoo National
Park north of the town of Beaufort West. From here its course (dry
except in times of good rain) meanders across vast scrubby farmlands
into ever increasing isolation until it spills into a mostly dry lake
bed named Grootvloer (great floor) some 450km's away. The entire region
through which the river winds is little known even to South Africans and
with most of its course falling on private land it is not an area easily
accessible to the public. Through a unique exercise, permission have
been obtained from all the landowners along the route to cross their
properties, and in so doing become the first expedition on record to
complete such a walk. It is for the free-spirited adventurer who can
endure the deprivations of 20 days in the harsh conditions on the
exposed plains. Those who think they have what it takes will be part of
a team whose aim will be to raise awareness to the plight of the
critically endangered Riverine Rabbit.
Karoo lovers and adventurers can join a walk along the Sak River from the 18
October 2004 to the 06 November 2004. The Sak River is the
longest river in the most isolated northern and western parts of the
semi-arid Karoo region in South Africa.
